From challenging gender discrimination in education to documenting the lives of women and LGBTQ+ communities, filmmaker Nyein has spent years bringing overlooked experiences into focus.

For Nyein, storytelling began long before she picked up a camera.

A former middle school teacher, writer, and filmmaker in her 50s, Nyein has followed a creative path shaped by her love of literature, her experiences in education, and her longstanding belief in equality.

After moving to Yangon in 2012, she became involved with PEN Myanmar and was selected for a scriptwriting opportunity in 2015. By 2016, she had begun making documentary films.

When Injustice Became a Story

One of Nyein's earliest documentaries, “Deep Inside Her” was filmed in Inle and later aired frequently on Mizzima.

The documentary followed a young woman who had achieved outstanding academic results, earning six distinctions in matriculation exam and the highest marks at her local high school, yet was unable to enter medical school. Male students with lower marks, meanwhile, were admitted.

She recalled a moment she decided to tell the story through filmmaking, “As a teacher, I couldn't accept seeing a girl with excellent results denied an opportunity that boys with lower marks could access.”

For Nyein, who had spent years working in education, the situation was deeply frustrating. What she witnessed was not simply one student's disappointment, but a wider problem of gender discrimination within the education system.

Her decision to document the case brought consequences. According to her account, she was required to sign an undertaking not to make another film of that nature by the Head of the Education Department.

But the experience also revealed something fundamental about her approach to storytelling: when she encounters injustice, she finds it difficult to remain silent.

Stories of Women, Courage, and Resistance

Over the years, women have remained central to Nyein's filmmaking.

One of her most meaningful works, “Steps Forward”, tells the story of a mother of three who courageously became involved in the resistance movement.

The documentary received an International Jury Mention at the 2024 DVB Peacock Film Festival, a recognition that holds particular significance for Nyein. Her choice of subjects reflects a consistent interest in the lives of women whose courage, struggles, and decisions are not always visible in mainstream narratives.

Giving Wings to Stories of Freedom

Now, through Exile Hub's Feminist Storytelling Grant, Nyein has produced a documentary titled “Rainbow Flying Freely”, a documentary exploring LGBTQ+ experiences.

The title evokes the possibility of flying freely despite the pressures, restrictions, and expectations that can make everyday life feel suffocating.

She shared her motivation into producing this documentary “I wanted to portray what it means to fly freely when so much around you makes you feel trapped.”

For Nyein, LGBTQ+ experiences are not a newly discovered interest. Her concern for equality and the freedom to live authentically has grown from values she has carried throughout her life.

Beyond Age and Expectations

Nyein's journey also challenges a familiar assumption: that openness to changing social values belongs primarily to younger generations. Her perspective was shaped not by age, but by a lifetime of reading, questioning, teaching, and observing the world around her.

Reading became an important part of how she understood the world, particularly questions of fairness, gender, and social expectations.

“My father raised me around books. Reading opened my mind to different ideas and taught me to question things that didn't seem fair.”  Nyein credits her father with nurturing her curiosity and introducing her to ideas that challenged conventional thinking.

From classrooms to documentary filmmaking, she has continued to ask difficult questions about inequality and whose voices are being left unheard. For Nyein, filmmaking is more than a creative pursuit. It is a way of giving visibility to experiences that might otherwise remain unseen.
